Episode 223 - Are UFO's Real Another View

🎙️ Welcome back to the show! Today, we’re diving deep into the mysterious world of UFOs with none other than Nigel Watson—author, researcher, and long-time UFO skeptic. Nigel has been investigating both historical and modern UFO sightings since the 1970s, and his work has appeared in Fortean Times, where he writes the monthly column “Saucers of the Damned.”

In this episode, Nigel shares what first drew him to the subject, why he took a break from UFO research in the 1990s, and how government disclosures in recent years have reignited global interest in the phenomenon. We’ll talk about everything from Northern England’s UFO hotspots, to false readings from modern UAP detectors, to why he thinks ufology has gone through cycles of enthusiasm and decline.

Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or just UFO-curious, you won’t want to miss this fascinating conversation with one of the most thoughtful voices in the field.

Nigel Watson

Nigel has been researching and investigating both historical and contemporary reports of UFO sightings since the 1970s, making him one of the most enduring voices in the field of ufology. Over the decades, his work has explored everything from the folklore and psychology of UFO encounters to government disclosure and the cultural impact of extraterrestrial beliefs.

He is best known for his monthly Fortean Times column, “Saucers of the Damned,” which examines unusual UFO cases with both skepticism and wit. Beyond Fortean Times, Nigel’s writing has appeared across a wide range of respected publications, including Magonia, All About Space, Starburst, Aquila, History Today, Fate, Flying Saucer Review, UFO Brigantia, Northern UFO News, The Unexplained, Paranormal Magazine, UFO Magazine, and Outer Limits Magazine. His essays and analyses have also been featured in the Darklore anthology series and several books edited by the late Timothy Green Beckley.

Most recently, Nigel contributed a chapter on the famous Betty and Barney Hill abduction case to The Reliability of UFO Witness Testimony (UPIAR Publisher, Italy, 2023), edited by V.J. Ballester-Olmos and Richard W. Heiden. His work continues to bridge the gap between cultural history, psychology, and UFO phenomena.

With a degree in Film and Literature from the University of Warwick and a degree in Psychology from the Open University, Nigel brings a rare interdisciplinary lens to the study of UFOs. A former London copywriter, he now lives in Plymouth, UK, where he continues to research, write, and share his lifelong fascination with the mysteries of the skies.

Nigel Watson’s latest work offers a fascinating exploration of the UFO phenomenon in the UK, drawing on decades of research and direct testimony from ordinary people who have encountered the extraordinary. Rather than leaning on speculation or theory, Watson highlights the lived experiences of witnesses whose sightings often escalate into encounters with entities, poltergeists, visions, and otherworldly phenomena that blur the line between the paranormal and extraterrestrial. Some accounts may sound like science fiction, yet they come from diverse voices across generations and communities. This book is a compelling reminder that UFO encounters are as much about human experience and mystery as they are about lights in the sky.
